Levels of PRINCE2® Examinations

There are two main levels of PRINCE2 exams: Foundation and Practitioner.

PRINCE2 has only one current edition: PRINCE2® 6th Edition. PRINCE2® 2009 exams ceased to be available at the beginning of 2018, however, a practitioner's existing certification will remain valid and the entry on the Successful Candidate Register will be maintained for five years after the Practitioner (or Re-registration) exam was successfully sat.

Foundation Level

Achieving Foundation-level certification demonstrates sufficient understanding of the method for someone to work effectively within, or supporting, a project.

NB: Foundation certification is required before achieving Practitioner certification.

Practitioner Level (Included Re-registration for 2009 - Exam Now Retired)

The PRINCE2 Practitioner certification is for anyone managing projects. This could be as part of a formal project management function or a role in which project management is an inherent part of day-to-day work. The Practitioner certification aims to confirm that you have sufficient knowledge and understanding in order to apply and tailor the method in a range of different project environments and scenarios.

Foundation Examination Details

Audience

This certification is aimed at current and aspiring project managers or professionals who manage projects. It is also relevant to other key staff involved in the design, development and delivery of projects, including: Project Board members (e.g. Senior Responsible Owners), Team Managers (e.g. Product Delivery Managers), Project Assurance (e.g. Business Change Analysts), Project Support (e.g. Project and Programme Office personnel) and operational line managers/staff.

Reasons to sit the examination:

  • To confirm you have working knowledge and understanding of the PRINCE2 method
  • As a pre-requisite for the Practitioner Certification

Prerequisites

The Foundation examination is the entry level for PRINCE2, no formal prerequisites exist.

Practitioner Examination Details

Audience

PRINCE2 at Practitioner level is suitable for project managers, project support, team members and managers from any discipline. Senior managers will also benefit from understanding how decision-support information is created and passed to appropriate managers. Reason to sit the examination:

  • To confirm you have achieved sufficient understanding of how to apply and tailor PRINCE2 in a scenario situation

Prerequisites

To take the PRINCE2 Practitioner examination (6th Edition or 2009) you must provide proof of having passed one of the following:

  • PRINCE2 Foundation (this must be a 2009 certificate or later)
  • Project Management Professional (PMP)*
  • Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)*
  • IPMA Level A® (Certified Projects Director)
  • IPMA Level B® (Certified Senior Project Manager)
  • IPMA Level C® (Certified Project Manager)
  • IPMA Level D® (Certified Project Management Associate)
